Dr. Vanessa Holden is Associate Professor of History and African American and Africana Studies. In

Surviving Southampton (University of Illinois Press 2021), she explores the contributions that African

American women and children made to the Southampton Rebellion, often called Nat Turner’s Rebellion.



Dr. Elizabeth Williams, Assistant Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies, will interview the author.

Please join us November 30th at 1:00 pm at the Cornerstone Esports Theater, or online, for INSIDE COMICS, a hybrid Q&A event with comic creators Stephanie Williams and O’Neill Jones. 

Stephanie Williams is a writer for DC's Nubia: Queen of the Amazons series, and also penned Wakanda #1 for Marvel. She's a comic book historian and pop culture critic for SYFYFANGRRLS, The A.V. Club, Nerdist, Den of Geek, and Rotten Tomatoes. Stephanie also created the webcomics Parenthood Activate! and But What If Though?

Erin O'Neill Jones is a comic book artist and illustrator who has drawn for publishers and brands such as: DC, IDW, Jordan Brand, Marvel, and Simon & Schuster. She is currently collaborating on REJECT SQUAD with author Alyssa Cole, which will be published in 2024 by Balzer + Bray / HarperCollins.

In 2020, Williams and ONeill Jones collaborated together to make Living Heroes, a fancomic mashup of superheroines and the 1990s sitcom, Living Single. The Kickstarter for this project was funded in a remarkable 24 hours.

Join us as we chat with these two creators about comics, characters, and collaboration. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions to the speakers.
