AWARDS

Kate Black Activism Award:  
Given in honor of Kate Black — a founding member of the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of Kentucky, long time community organizer and activist, scholar, curator and archivist — and in recognition of the vital relationship between feminist activism and scholarship in the field of Gender and Women’s Studies, this award recognizes outstanding achievement as a scholar and an activist in an undergraduate major or minor in Gender and Women's Studies.  

Joan Callahan Award for Scholastic Achievement:
Given in honor of Joan Callahan — Beloved Former Director of the Gender and Women’s Studies Program at the University of Kentucky, long time Faculty Affiliate of the Program and the Department, emeritus faculty of the University, Feminist Scholar, Moral Philosopher, exemplar of Intellectual Rigor and Excellence in research on Gender and Women.  This award recognizes outstanding achievement in scholarship in an undergraduate major or minor in Gender and Women’s Studies.      

Jan Oaks Feminist Creativity Award:
Given in honor of Jan Oaks- Beloved faculty in GWS and former director of the Women Writers Conference.  This award recognizes outstanding performance in humanities-based feminist study to an undergraduate major or minor in Gender and Women's Studies. 

SHOLARSHIPS & FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Tomasky Leaders:
GWS accepts applications each year from undergraduate UK students for the Tomasky Leaders Scholarship Fund competition.  Named for donor and alum Susan Tomasky '74, the scholarship encourages students to engage in politics and public debate, to pursue higher office, and to lead an activist life.  Keep an eye on your email and here for application deadlines.  Learn more here

Space, Place, and Southern Grace for Feminist Studies:
This scholarship is made possible by Sarah Caton (B.A. GWS ’16) and provides $1,000 for a GWS major entering their junior or senior year. The scholarship winner will also have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with Sarah for professional mentorship throughout the academic year. This scholarship is only open to GWS Majors. Call for applications will be sent out during the fall semester and awards will be distributed in the spring semester. HONORS

GWS Honors Requirement:
To be considered to graduate with honors in GWS, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and a major GPA of 3.5 or above. Honors requirements can be found in the bulletin.
